Android Auto for phone screens is running out

The death of Android auto caused a major disruption to The force last year, as if millions of drivers suddenly cried out in horror and were suddenly silenced. With Android 12, Google's original phone-friendly user interface for navigation, media, messaging, and more is gone, leaving only an assistive driving mode and a handful of third-party services in place. Nothing quite measures up to Android auto for phone screens, unfortunately for drivers with Android eleven and earlier, it's their time too.

Reddit user u/firstrta spotted a new warning on his Huawei P30 Lite, a phone that was never upgraded beyond Android 10, announcing that an Android vehicle outbreak was approaching (via 9to5Google). It's a new step for the company in its quest to push everyone towards Assisted Driving Mode, Android's new streamlined user interface that, unfortunately, isn't as feature-packed as the service it replaces.

Google's warning to users doesn't specify when the app will start dusting off, but the message isn't entirely confident for a summer full of road trips. The message reappears every time the app is opened, even if you've cleared it away before. It's a very clear warning from Google: don't expect this app to run for much longer.

Driving Assistant mode has come a long way since its initial launch, but it's still not quite as polished as Android vehicle. The app finally added a home screen shortcut a few months ago, although I've seen it disappear a few times from my device - a frustrating experience, to say the least. However, if you want to drive around this summer, and your car doesn't have a built-in display, you'll be out of luck.

We've reached out to Google to ask when we can expect the app to close for all devices and will update our coverage with any statement released. For now, drivers who still rely on putting the phone in their Android automobile may want to start looking for a replacement — it won't be long until it's gone for good.
